LeaderCorps members are current AmeriCorps Kansas members who were nominated by their program staff to strengthen the national service movement and promote awareness of AmeriCorps Kansas through outreach, collaboration and member engagement. During their service year, LeaderCorps members will plan service events, conduct outreach presentations, share their AmeriStories on social media and represent AmeriCorps Kansas at Kansas Volunteer Commission supported events. These members have agreed to take on an additional leadership role so they can grow personally and professionally while spreading the message of AmeriCorps’ impact. Hello! My name is Ben Commerford, and I am serving a full-time AmeriCorps term at Tuttle Creek State Park. I went to college at Kansas State University and studied Park Management and Conservation. I became aware that my local State Park worked with the AmeriCorps program. I decided to become an AmeriCorps member in order to fulfill my curriculum's internship requirement. The work experience I am gaining throughout my term with Tuttle Creek State Park is valuable to my future career. Some of my responsibilities include working on special projects throughout the park, helping to facilitate special events, and helping with clean up and repairs from extensive flooding in 2019. After completing my AmeriCorps term, I plan to pursue a career within Parks and Land Management agencies.

Hi! My name is Destini Mathis and I am an AmeriCorps member who serves with the Rosedale Development Association (RDA). I graduated from Hutchinson Community College in May of 2019 with my Associates in Business Management & Entrepreneurship. I went to Hutchinson Community College on a Track & Field Scholarship. After I finished my two year program, I decided to become an AmeriCorps member because I wanted to give back to my community but I just wasn’t sure where to start. AmeriCorps is a great place to help you find a career. As an AmeriCorps member, I help direct different programs run by RDA. I help out with gardening, neighborhood beautification, etc. My goal in life is to help change the world one step at a time by helping people or helping the environment.

Hello! My name is Kelly Leatherman and I am serving in Topeka, KS as a second-term member with Harvesters - The Community Food Network. I am originally from Lawrence, KS and I attended Drake University where I earned a degree in Public Relations and a degree in Environmental Policy. Following graduation, I spent a year serving as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Sarawak, Malaysia. The ability to serve abroad inspired me to serve at home, which is how I was introduced to AmeriCorps. I now serve in the Community Engagement Department at Harvesters where I coordinate volunteer opportunities, schedules food drives, and encourage public involvment in Harvesters. My favorite part about AmeriCorps is connecting with a diverse set of people who are united under the same mission. After AmeriCorps, I am off to graduate school where I will earn a Master of Public Affairs degree.

Hello! My name is Dylan Treadwell. I took this AmeriCorps opportunity because I wanted to gain experience and learn about the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (KDWP&T). My specific role in the AmeriCorps Outdoor Action team includes the improvment and upkeep of Kansas state parks, natural resources and the environment. Along with being part of the AmeriCorps Outdoor Action team, we have some non-traditional duties that come with being able to deploy and help clear areas after natural disasters occur. The professional goals I have for myself are to continue pursuing my degree in emergency risk management, continued service in the Kansas National Guard, and (hopefully) landing employment with KDWP&T as a Natural Resource Officer.

Hello! My name is Akaya Tate-Locke and I am an AmeriCorps member with the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, KS. I decided to join AmeriCorps because of the opportunities it gave me. I plan on earning my degree in education in order to become an elementary school teacher. I thought working for AmeriCorps as an academic enrichment facilitator would be the perfect opportunity to give me real classroom experience. During my time with AmeriCorps I have made many connections with amazing mentors, children, and peers. Working with AmeriCorps has definitely been the most fulfilling experience of my entire life and I highly recommend it to any individual who is interested in community work.

Hello! I am Jessica Renz, an AmeriCorps member with USD 260 in Derby, KS. I have always been a person who loves to help others and solve problems. When I heard about the AmeriCorps opportunity at Derby Schools I knew I could help students through my tutoring services. I also love the idea of helping them become civically engaged in their community, a core AmeriCorps value. I know this experience will help me reach my goals of becoming a teacher and social worker.
